چکیده

Until recently, numerical simulations of discontinuities in highly super-Alfvénic plasmas have been severely limited by comparatively crude resolution and accuracy. Significant progress in the numerical simulation of such plasmas was achieved with the recently implemented Central Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (CWENO) scheme. Combining this technique with that of adaptive mesh refinement (AMR), we have developed a third-order numerical scheme, which is able to efficiently capture strong gradients on spatial scales being small compared to the overall scale of the plasma system considered. Here, we first describe important algorithmic aspects of the scheme as well as the physics included in it. Second, we present the results of various performance tests. And, third, we illustrate its application to ‘real world problems’ using the example of the dynamics of a Sedov-type explosion.  2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A High Order Godunov Scheme with Constrained Transport and Adaptive Mesh Refinement for Astrophysical MHD

Aims. In this paper, we present a new method to perform numerical simulations of astrophysical MHD flows using the Adaptive Mesh Refinement framework and Constrained Transport. Methods. The algorithm is based on a previous work in which the MUSCL–Hancock scheme was used to evolve the induction equation. In this paper, we detail the extension of this scheme to the full MHD equations and discuss ...

A new MHD code with adaptive mesh refinement and parallelization for astrophysics

A new code, named MAP, is written in FORTRAN language for magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) calculation with the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) and Message Passing Interface (MPI) parallelization. There are several optional numerical schemes for computing the MHD part, namely, modified Mac Cormack Scheme (MMC), Lax-Fridrichs scheme (LF) and weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme. All of th...

Dynamic Grid Adaption for Computational Magnetohydrodynamics

In many plasma physical and astrophysical problems, both linear and nonlinear effects can lead to global dynamics that induce, or occur simultaneously with, local phenomena. For example, a magnetically confined plasma column can potentially posses global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) eigenmodes with an oscillation frequency that matches a local eigenfrequency at some specific internal radius. The c...

Adaptive mesh refinement with spectral accuracy for magnetohydrodynamics in two space dimensions

We examine the effect of accuracy of high-order spectral element methods, with or without adaptive mesh refinement (AMR), in the context of a classical configuration of magnetic reconnection in two space dimensions, the so-called Orszag-Tang vortex made up of a magnetic X-point centered on a stagnation point of the velocity. A recently developed spectral-element adaptive refinement incompressib...

A Stable, Accurate Methodology for High Mach Number, Strong Magnetic Field Mhd Turbulence with Adaptive Mesh Refinement: Resolution and Refinement Studies

Performing a stable, long duration simulation of driven MHD turbulence with a high thermal Mach number and a strong initial magnetic field is a challenge to high-order Godunov ideal MHD schemes because of the difficulty in guaranteeing positivity of the density and pressure. We have implemented a robust combination of reconstruction schemes, Riemann solvers, limiters, and Constrained Transport ...
